ESCAPEMENT PIECES
This group of work began from a challenge to create motion without using air movement or electric motors. I have always admired the way mechanical clocks work and thought that I could perhaps engineer a sculpture to move in a non-predictable pattern using a pendulum, counterweight and escape mechanism. In layman’s terms, this is a wheel with teeth and a rocking pallet above or below it that catches and releases the wheel in synchronicity with the movement of the pendulum. My vision was to have this be the central driver of motion in the following series of works. The piece ESCARGOT was the first.
